In New Orleans where this recipe originated, Monday was known as washing day. That meant the house staff wasn't going to have time to prepare a complicated multi course meal. Instead this recipe developed as something you could put in a pot in the morning and with almost nothing else than a bit of stirring here and there, you could have a wonderful filling meal come dinner time. This recipe is vegetarian but you can add Italian sausage, ham or a ham bone for flavoring if you are not vegetarian.

Red Beans and Rice

1 LB dry red beans

1 large white onion

1/4 c chopped parsley

2 tsp basil (fresh if you have it)

2 bay leaves

salt, black and cayenne pepper to taste (after beans have softened)

Put beans in pot of cold water with enough water to cover 3" over top of beans. Let beans soak overnight with lid on pot. Next day, rinse that water out and add fresh water to pot, with enough water to cover 2-3" over beans. Add all ingredients except for salt and bring to boil. Once boiling occurs, stir then cover and lower temp to simmer until beans are tender (3-5 hours). After beans are soft, add salt and any extra needed spices like black and cayenne pepper.

For the rice, you can use either brown or white rice. Follow package directions but add 1 tsp vinegar and 1 pinch salt to completely cooked rice. Spoon red beans and sauce over rice. Serve with crusty French bread.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica"; font-size: 12px;"> <span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Tarrah Rose Anderson is a girl on the go. Whether living in Chicago (where she is currently), spending the summer in Seattle or moving back to her hometown of KC (which she'll be doing very shortly) she brings with her the jewelry business she founded named Whiskey & Bone. She's also a vendor in the Maker Market at the upcoming Boulevardia show here in KC June 17-19. Here's a bit more about Tarrah and her growing biz:

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">1. When did you start Whiskey and Bone?
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Whiskey + Bone started in December of 2014. I had another jewelry business that I was messing around with for a couple years prior but the jewelry wasn't me. It was "blingy" and not anything I was really proud of, so to speak. One day I was at brunch with a good, very honest friend and we got to talking about my business. I told her that eventually I wanted to rebrand, change and basically start all over. She told me she couldn't agree more with my decision and literally that day Whiskey and Bone was born.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">2. How long have you been making and designing jewelry?

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">I've been a "maker" my whole life. I've always been all about getting my hands dirty and messing around with different forms of art. (In college I studied fashion design / merchandising but switched to floral design ... Later went on to take a class in metal smithing) but it wasn't until maybe 5 years ago, I decided that while the little girl I nanny was in school, I wanted to find something to take up my time during the day. I first started out wholesaling and reselling jewelry from China. It was okay but again I wanted to be creative so I would take things apart and reconstruct them. About 4 years ago I started fully making and designing jewelry. Two years ago I took a metal smithing class at a local community college and learned more about metal and my whole focus changed. So long answer short I've been making and designing for about 4 years.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">3. What or who inspires you artistically? Any jewelry heroes?

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">What inspires me? Well one of my most favorite things to do is go on road trips. I stay in Seattle with the little girl I nanny and her dad every summer. Along the way my sister or dad and I stop at Rock shops, bead stores and all over to pick things up for me to create with. Traveling for sure. Being around other makers. Our Kansas City maker family is incredibly talented and it pushes me to wanna create. Last I would say my family. They have been the ones pushing me to keep going when I've wanted to quit. I'm super lucky my family is so supportive. ((Jewelry heroes? If you would have asked me like 8 years ago I would have said Betsey Johnson. What wild stuff she's got!))

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">4. Any new products or plans for the future that you want to announce?

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">I'm working on lots. With Boulevardia consuming my life right now, I am holding off on my new "Bone Box" (it's a 3 month jewelry subscription). In other news I'm super excited for this fall, I have been accepted into a new communal art studio. We will be offering classes, #girlboss nights, pop ups, classes helping with Etsy / Websites and so so much more!

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Tarrah will be showing and selling the full Whiskey & Bone line at Boulevardia June 17-19 in KCMO.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">You can follow her on Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/whiskeyandbone/ and Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/WhiskeyandBone/?fref=ts
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"> If you can't make it to the show, you can purchase any of her lovely items in her Etsy shop here: https://www.etsy.com/shop/WhiskeyandBone

Made in the traditional Japanese method called Shibori, she hand dyes the fabric (in her back yard!) then hand sews it into everything from yoga mats, baby rompers, scarves, tapestries and wall mounted pieces. Jess will be debuting this limited edition collection at Boulevardia June 17-19 in KCMO. That means that if you want one of these luscious items, you'll need to purchase it soon because this is not an ongoing collection. She wants to keep that feeling of freshness by constantly creating new and different collections, including some larger fine art quilts and mixed media pieces.

Jess says that she feels that with the arrival of her baby boy Sonny last year, she is now at a point in her life where it's clear to her what path she wants her art to take. "Since my time is more divided now, I realize want I truly want to focus on and that's not reproducing the same items but creating new ones in collections that are always evolving."

The Indigo Collection is available on her site www.cartwheeljess.com and at Boulevardia.
I find it always helps to have visited a city before and I love visiting Denver and the surrounding mountain ranges and Rocky Mountain National Park. These are 6 of the places I chose to illustrate from Denver but I'll add in one or two more plus the skyline as I finish this piece. Then I'll be making tea towels, pillows, prints, melamine trays and platters, mugs and totes! If you're from Denver and have other popular places to add to this, please leave a comment below. I'll do my best to include it.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> I always love visiting New York. There's an energy there that makes it hard for me to even sleep, there's so much going on! This is by no means a comprehensive list of places to go in New York but if you've never been there it may give you some ideas you hadn't thought of. Links are included below. Just click on anything underlined.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Above is my "flatlay" of our NY trip. I'll use it as a quick guide to some great things to do when in NYC.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">• Museums: We saw three: the Tenement Museum, the Guggenheim and the Metropolitan Museum of Art <span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">You can't go wrong with any of these but the Tenement Museum was so unique and memorable. They offer so many different tours of what life was like for new immigrants around the turn of the century that I feel like I could go back several times and see something new every time. Led by well-informed guides, you'll be led into an actual tenement that was frozen in time in 1935. You'll find out about the actual families that lived in that building, their struggles, and successes in finding a new life in America.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">• Apple crumb pie: Who doesn't love pie? I had apple pie in two places-the Bar Next Door in the West Village and take out from Cafe European. For sheer ambience, go to the Bar Next Door. Tucked under a brownstone, you almost miss it but once you walk in and tuck into a cozy booth, you'll never want to leave. It feels like you're in a pub in England. This club only seats around 25 people, but somehow they fit a small jazz band in the corner. Candles light the place. Did I say it was cozy?
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">• Jazz clubs: We went to four. In order, the Blue Note, Jazz at Lincoln Center, the Lambs Club, and the Bar Next Door. There's no way to compare the four of these as they all offer something different and completely wonderful. At the Blue Note, we walked in 10 minutes before showtime at 10:20 on a Sunday night and were led to a table right in front to see the amazing John Scofield. Crowded but awesome experience. For Jazz at Lincoln Center, there are 3 clubs to choose from but we were in the jaw dropping Appel Room. (I have to say here that we were there to watch our son and his college jazz band perform so it was extra special to us but no matter, that room would be incredible just sitting empty.) Imagine standing in front of a 3 story high glass wall overlooking Columbus Circle and Central Park as the sun goes down. If you're in the mood for a high priced drink and some cool jazz in a beautiful setting, try the Lambs Club. The Art Deco interior is worth the price of admission. See previous bullet point for description of Bar Next Door.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">•Restaurants: We went to at least thirteen. And don't worry, I'm not going to list them all. But here are a couple of my faves that I always try to visit. El Quijote-located in the ground floor of the Chelsea Hotel, I LOVE this place for it's dimly lit kitschy decor, waiters with old world manners, and wonderful Spanish food. If you're near the High Line, go to Pepegaillo on 10th Ave. Cozy, funky, eclectic decor with a friendly waitstaff and great Italian food at excellent prices. They even have an entire gluten-free menu too.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">• Miles Walked: Twelve (at least). Wear comfortable shoes. Enough said.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">• Steps Climbed: 600. This is a conservative estimate. Again, consider footwear carefully.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">• Iced Coffees: Nine or so. Best one was at Underline Coffee under the High Line.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">• Subways taken: 16. Don't be afraid of the subway in New York. We had several people ask us if we needed help (which we did). This happens every time I'm there-locals go out of their way to help tourists use the transit system. Just ask someone if it doesn't make sense. Soon people will be asking for YOUR help (and we were able to help after just 3 days there)
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">• Photos Taken: 465 or so. And I'm going to show you all of them here! Just kidding...relax. In future posts I'll share some that I hope will inspire you like they did me.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">•Bus Trips Taken: 23.When you compare the cost of Ubering or cabbing everywhere in NYC, there's just no comparison to taking their always available transit system. I was always skittish about transferring to the bus from the subway or vice versa and like Hilary, I had to swipe my Metro Card about 6 times the first time I used it but soon it was no big deal. In my opinion, you meet more people and get the feel of the city when you use their transit system too.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">• Cannoli eaten: Last but not least--I only ate 2 cannoli this time around in NY, but I could've eaten 3 a day. You can find them everywhere it seems, but the best one I had was at Carlo's Bakery near Times Square. The crispy shell was just that-crispy, even though is was covered in thick dark chocolate. The filling was simply yummy. Carlo's got even more popular after appearing on the show Cake Boss, but their popularity is well deserved. They have at least 11 locations now.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

1 Tbsp olive oil

3 medium carrots, cut into 1/4 inch dice

2 medium celery stalks, diced

1 medium onion, diced

2 garlic cloves, minced

2 cans (15-19 oz each) white kidney beans, rinsed and drained

1 can (14 1/2 oz) vegetable broth

1 medium bunch dinosaur kale (about 12 oz)

1/2 tsp salt

grated Parmesan or vegan cheese (optional)

1. In 4-quart saucepan, heat oil over medium heat until hot. Add carrots, celery, and onion, and cook 10 to 12 minutes or until tender, stirring occasionally. Add garlic and cook 1 minute, stirring. Add beans, broth and 2 3/4 cups water; heat to boiling over high heat. Reduce heat to low; simmer, uncovered 10 minutes.

2. Meanwhile, trim and discard tough stems and center ribs from kale; slice leaves crosswise.

3. Stir in kale and salt; heat to boiling over high heat. Reduce heat to low; cover and simmer 10 minutes or until kale is tender. Serve with Parmesan or vegan cheese if you prefer. Makes about 8 cups or 4 main dish servings.

Naum Gabo (1890-1977) redefined the relationship between architecture and art many, many years ago with his surprising use of his architectural knowledge in traditionally soft, fluid designs such as faces or bodies. I’ve always appreciated his use of clean lines and several dimensional angles. You can see examples of this to the right as well as more of his work below!
It was important for Gabo to emphasis empty spaces in his
work to give a sense of special movement within his pieces. Fluidity in the
pieces targeted the elements of space and time which were elements that Gabo
wanted his audience to recognized and take away with them.

thinking that I’m going to accomplish all the 14 items on my to-do list only to
look at the clock at 4PM thinking <span style="font-family: "calibri";">“ Where did the time go? I still have 10 things to get done!
” If you’ve ever had that experience too, you know what I mean. Being
self-employed can be a wonderfully freeing <span style="font-family: "calibri";">experience IF you’re able to manage your time well. I’ve
been working from home now for the past 7 years and have tried many things in
my quest for better time management. <span style="font-family: "calibri";">These simple and free time hacks that have worked for me so
I hope they help you as well!
<span style="font-family: "calibri";">

1. Make a list

I’m a compulsive list maker. I’ve been known
to make grocery lists then leave them at home but recall all the items on the
list anyway. Something about writing things down really helps me commit them to memory, at least
for the short term. Since I left the lists at home more than once, that led me
to my next tip.

2. Put your list on your phone

<span style="font-family: "calibri";">There are many
organizational apps out there but the one that I’m using right now is
Wunderlist. I’m using the free version but you can upgrade f<span style="font-family: "calibri";">or $4.99. The things I like about Wunderlist are that it
lets you share your list with others and then anyone can add to that list on
the fly. You can also add notes to each task or <span style="font-family: "calibri";">add them to your iCal. Plus, if you’re like me, you always
have your phone with you so that eliminates the possibility of leaving that
list on the table!

<span style="font-family: "calibri";">

3. Set a timer

<span style="font-family: "calibri";">For me, the toughest thing to do is to make
myself sit for at least 2 hours uninterrupted and sketch or draw. I love doing
it but somehow always find things to distract <span style="font-family: "calibri";">myself. I have several freelancer friends who told me about
setting a timer to accomplish daily tasks. I have to admit I was stubborn for
awhile about doing this, thinking <span style="font-family: "calibri";">“I know how to manage my time! I don’t need a timer to help
me out.” But then I tried it and now I’m hooked! I know there are also timer
apps to be had but I just use the timer <span style="font-family: "calibri";">app on my iPhone. Each day I set a timer for
2 hours and do nothing but sketch or draw on the computer. My productivity has
gone way up as a result and I <span style="font-family: "calibri";">feel more calm in the afternoon, knowing that I made
progress on whatever project I’m working on.

<span style="font-family: "calibri";">

4. Remember this: “ There is always, only, just this one
step” -Eckhart Tolle

<span style="font-family: "calibri";">I love this saying by Eckhart Tolle. He has written very
eloquently about living in the moment and whenever I get overwhelmed thinking I
have WAY too much to do, I try to <span style="font-family: "calibri";">remind myself of these simple words. We can, in reality, only
do one thing at a time. We can try to multitask but recent studies have shown
that multitasking is a myth, as dividing <span style="font-family: "calibri";">your attention doesn’t really help you accomplish more
tasks, but it can add to a feeling of agitation or frustration.

<span style="font-family: "calibri";">See The Myth of Multitasking by Christine Rosen: http://www.thenewatlantis.com/publications/the-myth-of-multitasking

5. Make time for something just for you

<span style="font-family: "calibri";">It’s really
tempting to just go down that chore list marking off things like paying the
insurance bill etc, but have you ever added something <span style="font-family: "calibri";">to your list that is not work related? I try to always add
one thing to my list that I use as my reward for getting several drudgery tasks
done--like meeting a friend for coffee or <span style="font-family: "calibri";">taking that Pilates class I keep saying I’ll take but never and
time for. ( To me, finding time to go to the gym several times a week is a
little gift I give myself that helps me stay <span style="font-family: "calibri";">sane and also step away from my desk.)

<span style="font-family: "calibri";">

<span style="font-family: "calibri";">I hope that these few easy time hacks help you! Do you have
some time management tips or apps that help you out? I’d love to hear about
them if so!

Let’s obsess over an illustrative and typography genius for a
minute. Have you heard of Alex Steinweiss? Don’t worry, neither had I until a
few months ago but he did something pretty amazing back in 1939 when he
invented the album cover when he was just 23 (I know, we all feel like we’ve
been slacking now!). Besides being a complete visionary in the music industry
he was also an extremely talented illustrator, with a unique and original
style. See some of his work below!

I can't thank my hometown of Kansas City enough for all the attention on my little biz! It means so much to have this kind of local support. Here is a clip of the appearance I got to do on Fox4 News a few days ago and also an article that just came out today in the 913 section of the KC Star.

First things first: I'm super thrilled to say that I'll be debuting my new Plaza Lights collection that will match the 2015 Plaza Lights banners this year! All these products are for sale on my site (click any product below to buy) and at all my shows this weekend and this Fall too.

If you're in or near the KC area, I'll be doing two super fun events this weekend: On Sat Sept 12 at the West Elm on the Country Club Plaza, there'll be a fun pop up shop curated by Fallon Hogerty of A Lovely Being blog. There'll be several great local designers and makers there from 1:00-6:00. I'm really thrilled to be in this show as West Elm is a wonderful partner and totally supports LOCAL artists! Click on image below for more details.

Next, I'll be in the Chick Events Handmade and Vintage show on Sept 12 and 13 in Leawood KS. There will be food trucks, live music, 95 vendors and a play area for the kids! Details below. I hope to see you at one (or both!) of these great events.
It's a 3-day music, beer, art and food fest held under the 12th street bridge in KC's West bottoms. You can find me and my beer and meat themed tea towels there in the Maker's Market area. I'll also have all my city tea towels, pillows, prints, and cards too of course. If you're in or near the area, hope to see you there! Just click on link below the BLVDIA image for more info.
The first one is going to be held at West Elm on the Country Club Plaza in KCMO on Sat May 30. I'll be teaching you how to stitch a KC pillow with my kit and then after the class, I'll put a pillow back on for you and ship it back to you. Pretty sweet huh? You don't even have to mess with sewing anything but the fun part--the front of the pillow. Cost of the class is $38.00 ($24 for the pillow kit and $14 for class/pillow back/shipping)
What's New in the shopIt was SO much fun to design these 3 new pieces for my shop. It comes easier to me to draw things like beer and food so it was actually hard to stop there! Even though the Beer Lover and Carnivore tea towel or the Beer/Hat Pairings Print would make great Father's Day gifts (just sayin) they can also be gifts for those other folks in your life who are really into grilling or beer. Click on any images below for link to my shop.
I absolutely LOVE chatting with women who are business owners-who have a vision and take the steps to seeing that vision become reality. I think they're some of the most interesting people and I always feel like I come away having learned something from them. So I'm beginning this series with a woman that I met recently in Memphis. Her name is Cyndii Jo Hartley and she owns a beautiful mobile boutique called Henny Penny.

http://hennypennymemphis.com

Before even going to Memphis, I had heard of Henny Penny on the web when I was searching for Memphis art shows so I was thrilled when she entered my booth and we got to talking. It just so happens that I had signed up for two different Memphis shows within three weeks time, so the next trip I decided to search out and interview Cyndii Jo and find out more about her and her business. I hope reading about Cyndii Jo and the other women entrepreneurs in coming months will inspire you to follow your own vision.

Q: Tell me a bit about your background.
CJ: I studied theatre in college and worked in many different parts of theatre production. One of the things I found I loved to do was hair for the theatrical productions. After getting my license, I began designing wigs and doing makeup for opera and theatre. I was a wig and makeup designer for Opera Memphis for several years and now work as a hairdresser in a salon. One of the things I love most is talking with my customers so being in a salon every day feels like a great fit for me.

Q: When and why did you start your business?
CJ: About two years ago, I had a bike accident and broke my shoulder. Since being a hairdresser requires use of both hands, I couldn't work for 6 weeks so I found myself with a lot of time to think. This accident gave me the opportunity to start thinking about what else I could do that wasn't so physical. I had always loved fashion and the idea of owning my own boutique sounded intriguing to me, but I wasn't sure where to start.

Q: What made you want to have a mobile boutique rather than a B and M (brick and mortar) boutique?
CJ: Well, my first goal was actually to have an online shop (which I now have) but at that time the city of Memphis was offering what they called MEMMobile "forgivable loans" to prospective business owners who wanted to own and operate their own mobile business in the Memphis area. After doing tons of research about mobile businesses, I found the American Mobile Retail Association and got really inspired by the growing mobile business movement! I saw all these fantastic trucks and started thinking about how I could start my own mobile fashion truck. After that came the step of filling out the paperwork for the loan. That part was very time-consuming and detailed, but it forced me to write down a business plan and put down on paper exactly what I wanted this to be.

Q: What shows do you do?
CJ: Right now I sell mostly at home parties, fundraising events, farmer's markets, and the indie holiday market. I'll also be invited to park my bus outside friends' businesses in the Broad Avenue part of town for weekend events. My collection is made of clothes that are easy to wear and comfortable yet still look stylish.

Q: Do you sell online also?
CJ: Yes I have an online boutique here: https://henny-penny-memphis.myshopify.com

Q: What are your plans for the future as far as Henny Penny goes?
CJ: I really love hairstyling and don't want to stop that part of my life, however what I'd like to do is combine a hairstyling salon with my clothing store in a brick and mortar location. I believe if the retail portion is a well-curated business, you can add in a second complimentary business.

Q: Have you taken any business classes?
CJ: No, I haven't taken any business classes but have taken social media workshops offered by the city of Memphis. That was part of the whole Mem-Mobile program and they were designed to help us feel comfortable talking to the media about our new businesses.

Q: What's on your bucket list?
CJ: I'd love to spend my 40th birthday in Paris! Also I want to dance the perfect pasodoble.

Q: Do you have a philosophy of life that you live by?
CJ: The thing that always runs through my head is that it's not all about me. I try to focus on other people, on helping them or being there for them. I find when I do that I feel lighter and better overall.
