Naum Gabo

INFLUENCE.

It’s always inspiring to me to see how different artist can use architecture to influence their work since architecture is a pretty heavy influence in my own work. Naum Gabo (1890-1977) redefined the relationship between architecture and art many, many years ago with his surprising use of his architectural knowledge in traditionally soft, fluid designs such as faces or bodies. I’ve always appreciated his use of clean lines and several dimensional angles. You can see examples of this to the right as well as more of his work below!

Gabo was versatile in the mediums that he used in his pieces which include glass, metal and plastic, some combining multiple in one structure.

It was important for Gabo to emphasis empty spaces in his work to give a sense of special movement within his pieces. Fluidity in the pieces targeted the elements of space and time which were elements that Gabo wanted his audience to recognized and take away with them.

Time Hacks

TIPS.

I don’t know about you but I start the day calm and confident, thinking that I’m going to accomplish all the 14 items on my to-do list only to look at the clock at 4PM thinking “ Where did the time go? I still have 10 things to get done! ” If you’ve ever had that experience too, you know what I mean. Being self-employed can be a wonderfully freeing experience IF you’re able to manage your time well. I’ve been working from home now for the past 7 years and have tried many things in my quest for better time management. These simple and free time hacks that have worked for me so I hope they help you as well!

1. Make a list

I’m a compulsive list maker. I’ve been known to make grocery lists then leave them at home but recall all the items on the list anyway. Something about writing things down really helps me commit them to memory, at least for the short term. Since I left the lists at home more than once, that led me to my next tip.

 2. Put your list on your phone

There are many organizational apps out there but the one that I’m using right now is Wunderlist. I’m using the free version but you can upgrade for $4.99. The things I like about Wunderlist are that it lets you share your list with others and then anyone can add to that list on the fly. You can also add notes to each task or add them to your iCal. Plus, if you’re like me, you always have your phone with you so that eliminates the possibility of leaving that list on the table!

3. Set a timer

For me, the toughest thing to do is to make myself sit for at least 2 hours uninterrupted and sketch or draw. I love doing it but somehow always find things to distract myself. I have several freelancer friends who told me about setting a timer to accomplish daily tasks. I have to admit I was stubborn for awhile about doing this, thinking “I know how to manage my time! I don’t need a timer to help me out.” But then I tried it and now I’m hooked! I know there are also timer apps to be had but I just use the timer app on my iPhone. Each day I set a timer for 2 hours and do nothing but sketch or draw on the computer. My productivity has gone way up as a result and I feel more calm in the afternoon, knowing that I made progress on whatever project I’m working on.

4. Remember this: “ There is always, only, just this one step” -Eckhart Tolle

I love this saying by Eckhart Tolle. He has written very eloquently about living in the moment and whenever I get overwhelmed thinking I have WAY too much to do, I try to remind myself of these simple words. We can, in reality, only do one thing at a time. We can try to multitask but recent studies have shown that multitasking is a myth, as dividing your attention doesn’t really help you accomplish more tasks, but it can add to a feeling of agitation or frustration.
See The Myth of Multitasking by Christine Rosen: http://www.thenewatlantis.com/publications/the-myth-of-multitasking

5. Make time for something just for you

It’s really tempting to just go down that chore list marking off things like paying the insurance bill etc, but have you ever added something to your list that is not work related? I try to always add one thing to my list that I use as my reward for getting several drudgery tasks done--like meeting a friend for coffee or taking that Pilates class I keep saying I’ll take but never and time for. ( To me, finding time to go to the gym several times a week is a little gift I give myself that helps me stay sane and also step away from my desk.)

I hope that these few easy time hacks help you! Do you have some time management tips or apps that help you out? I’d love to hear about them if so!

INFLUENCE.

Let’s obsess over an illustrative and typography genius for a minute. Have you heard of Alex Steinweiss? Don’t worry, neither had I until a few months ago but he did something pretty amazing back in 1939 when he invented the album cover when he was just 23 (I know, we all feel like we’ve been slacking now!). Besides being a complete visionary in the music industry he was also an extremely talented illustrator, with a unique and original style. See some of his work below!

You can see that Alex enjoyed using mostly original illustrative work that was unique to his mid-century modern style. Whimsical, playful but thoughtful.

Alex was also known for keeping his color palette simple, mostly 4 colors or less in every cover. This practice is used to help viewers really enjoy the artwork without being distracted by a rainbow of colors. You can see this influence is almost all of my work.

Alex experimented with several original forms of typography, most famous for this curly hand-drawn lettering. His lettering became so popular it was copyrighted as ‘Steinweiss Scrawl.'

I hope you enjoyed a quick introduction and run-through of Alex’s work. Maybe he’ll inspire you to create something new and amazing! Until next time

Did You Miss Me?

RECAP.
Evening everyone! What an incredible year it has been since last time we connected. Let’s run

through this fast so we can get to the even better things coming your way.

• My business has grown to over 35 wholesaler locations over 23 cities adding 11 cities
since we last spoke and 4 within last month. *see list at bottom of new cities

• I’ve added custom work for a selection of incredible companies including Boulevard

Brewing Company and Shatto Milk (hometown favorites!).

• I continued to add to my city collection (21 cities in total so far!) but also created
designs around some big events here in my hometown of Kansas City, like my World
Series champs tea towel, Plaza Lights holiday collection, a Valentine’s Day heart
collection and more to come!

REINVENT.

For the new year I'm refocusing this blog on some things I love like architecture, food, illustration,

cocktails and many more indulgences we all probably share.

REPEAT.

Stay tuned every other Wednesday to see where we go from here! A little mysterious, huh? That’s

the point!

It Must Be My 15 Minutes...

This year I've enjoyed an overwhelming amount of attention for my business, mostly due to the fact that I created the Plaza Lights banners this year. I can't thank my hometown of Kansas City enough for all the attention on my little biz! It means so much to have this kind of local support. Here is a clip of the appearance I got to do on Fox4 News a few days ago and also an article that just came out today in the 913 section of the KC Star.

Plaza Lights Collection debut plus 2---count em---2 shows this weekend!

First things first: I'm super thrilled to say that I'll be debuting my new Plaza Lights collection that will match the 2015 Plaza Lights banners this year! All these products are for sale on my site (click any product below to buy) and at all my shows this weekend and this Fall too.

If you're in or near the KC area, I'll be doing two super fun events this weekend: On Sat Sept 12 at the West Elm on the Country Club Plaza, there'll be a fun pop up shop curated by Fallon Hogerty of A Lovely Being blog. There'll be several great local designers and makers there from 1:00-6:00. I'm really thrilled to be in this show as West Elm is a wonderful partner and totally supports LOCAL artists! Click on image below for more details.

Next, I'll be in the Chick Events Handmade and Vintage show on Sept 12 and 13 in Leawood KS. There will be food trucks, live music, 95 vendors and a play area for the kids! Details below. I hope to see you at one (or both!) of these great events.

Boulevardia!

I'm SO psyched to be a part of one of KC's newest and best festivals: Boulevardia! It's a 3-day music, beer, art and food fest held under the 12th street bridge in KC's West bottoms. You can find me and my beer and meat themed tea towels there in the Maker's Market area. I'll also have all my city tea towels, pillows, prints, and cards too of course. If you're in or near the area, hope to see you there! Just click on link below the BLVDIA image for more info.
